In the spring of 2014, the last place in the world I imagined I’d be in a year is at a gym like Strongside. Now that I have been a part of it for 11 months, I can’t see being anywhere else!
As a child I tried every sport you could think of and succeeded at failing at every single one. Because of my severe lack of coordination, I was never one to be super active and told myself I just wasn’t meant to be an athlete like my friends.
I began to lose track of my weight and my eating habits once I began high school. Stress eating and sleeping whenever I wasn’t doing homework became the norm.
I was always self-conscious about my body and unhappy with my weight so I began at a gym in the summer of 2013 and was “completely dedicated” to it. I went every day and saw no results. I had no idea what I was doing and no idea how to use any of the ridiculous machines. In the winter of 2013, I went to the doctor for my annual check up and the scale read 190 lbs and my doctor came in to talk to me about weight management and healthy living. From that point on, I realized it was time to make a change.
In April of 2014, my mom suggested I go workout with her at this place called “Strongside” with this guy named “Mitchel.” I lacked faith in my mother’s judgement and in my ability to do anything this “Mitchel” guy was going to ask me to do. I “couldn’t” run, I “couldn’t” squat, and surely I “couldn’t” put any weight over my head.
As time at Strongside went on, I found myself running, squatting, putting weight over my head, and doing so many other things that I previously thought I could never do. I began to see the pounds melt off and see the improvements I was making in the gym and at home. As even more time went by, I realized that the number on the scale meant nothing to me in comparison to seeing how much weight I could lift, how far I could run, or how much closer to a pull up I could get.
The community at Strongside is one like no other I have ever seen or been a part of. It is genuine, loving, supportive, and motivating. No matter where you are in your fitness journey, someone is always there to tell you great job or to push you when you need that extra bump to finish. One of my favorite aspects of Strongside is the family that has been created by everyone’s shared dedication to health and pursuit of excellence.
It has been 11 months and I am down countless pounds and 8 dress sizes; but more important than that is that I am a different person. I no longer make excuses, I no longer believe I can’t do something because it’s something I’ve never done, I no longer allow myself to be anything less than excellent. I sincerely believe there is no other place I would have rather embarked on this hard, crazy, rewarding ride than at Strongside.
